      Forums Restructured   09/22/2016

      A lot of less active forums have been removed and consolidated with larger forums.  SEC Recruiting and Official Game Threads have been merged into SEC Football Talk.  All SEC Social Groups have been moved under their respective team forums. All other Social Groups have been merged into the Water Fountain. Other less active off-topic forums such as Think Tank, SciFi, Gaming, etc, have been merged into the Water Fountain.

NCLB created a business model to be used to determine a school's performance. The standardized test results were used like profit margins are used to decide if a business is doing well. Business and education DO NOT RELATE. I agree that a schools success needs to be measured. However, the measurement should be based on each individual student. As a former middle school math teacher, I changed my career after NCLB became law. I knew there was no way a school could achieve the proficiency level required in the law. Reasons for this is because teachers cannot control the mobility of people or the type of parenting a child has. Kids learn more in the environment they spend the most time in. They spend the most time at home. It is simply too many variables teachers do not have control of the effects a childs education. NCLB created a one aize fits all approach to education. This means every child was viewed as the same, meaning each child lived the same, was being raised the same, and had the same type of parenting. Everybody knows this is not true. Education is all about progress. Each child should be measured from their own individual knowledge from the previous year in school. Teachers should be able to use classwork samples, quizzes, classroom tests, and tests created by each individual school based on the skills each student should learn in each grade. Standardized tests are a farce and should be dumped in a standardized dumpster. Standardized accentuates the moniker of equal. Every human being is different and similar in many ways. Anything standardized will not account for these differences.

As 2014 approaches, practically every school in the U.S. will be labeled a failure under NCLB. The only ones left standing will be those that find ways to game the system.

NCLB has totally unrealistic goals--that every child be proficient in reading and math by 2014. Proficiency, by whatever definition, is a high level of achievement--certainly above average. For every child to be above average is an unattainable goal. Statistically, for every child to be average (or grade level) is impossible. There are simply students with learning handicaps and disadvantages who may make great progress but never become proficient.

So why are we stuck with such a law? As cynical as it sounds, the law was purposely designed by the Bush administration to set public schools up for failure and then offer vouchers to parents in “failing” schools that enabled them to enroll their children in private schools, including church schools. Sen. Ted Kennedy, who liked the “accountability” aspect of the bill, agreed to cosponsor it if the voucher provision was removed. With his influence vouchers were knocked out and the law passed.

With vouchers out, the Bush administration began pushing charter schools as an alternative to “failing” schools. But charter operators were interested in starting schools from scratch, not taking over schools with difficult-to-teach students. So we ended up with other penalties for “failure”--such as conversion to charters with an infusion of extra money (money never available to the struggling public school), mass firings of teachers, etc.

As 2014 approaches, we are in one mell of a hess.

Stupid blanket policies....they don't work for every county in every state. Different areas/populations require different strategies. Definitely one of the stupidest things Bush enacted.

We only hope more states follow in Tennessee's footsteps...this law is killing education and it's true values.

Teachers can't teach anymore...they have to teach to the test and are always scared that they are going to loose their job or their school is going to be closed cause little Johhnny (who stayed up all last night playing video games) is not going to do well on his math end of the year test...what a crock!!!

Hogan I agree with you on this. A win here helps teachers and students and allows true education to take place.

What leads one to a career choice of 'middle school math teacher'? Do they cull out the guys that didn't pass Calculus II in college?

      Agreed. Even knowing how it played out it's still interesting to read an article that sums it up so well. We see programs fall hard in short time frames all the time(though ours' is probably a pretty extreme example), and most people from the outside of the programs wonder how it happens so fast. Truth be told these are almost always "perfect storm brewing" scenarios that outsiders don't see until the tornado touches down.

      I agree.  I don't trust him to represent us at all.  He's more worried about seeing if he actually can do it. He kept promoting his investments and properties.   Middle class America doesn't care.  Meanwhile Hillary is too busy trying to con the minority vote and bleeding heart liberals into voting for her.   Who the hell is actually paying attention the middle class white America?

      Which is what we must get back to. States handle social issues. Fed handles trade, fiscal issues, and diplomacy. Unfortunately the fed has failed at those the last 3 decades. We've killed our economy through bad trade deals, high taxes/bad tax code, and war.
