Scandal Bowl: Why Tar Heel Fraud Might Just Be the Start

16 posts in this topic

A few tidbits from linked story....

The corruption of academics at the University of North Carolina’s Chapel Hill campus could turn into the most revelatory of all of the undergraduate sports scandals in recent memory.

The rot in Chapel Hill undermines UNC’s reputation as one of the nation’s finest public institutions of higher learning. Officials created classes that did not meet. That’s not the only reason more scrutiny is needed. There’s also the particularly pernicious way that the school’s African and Afro-American Studies Department has been used to inflate the GPAs of basketball and football players. The corruption of a scholarly discipline devoted to black history and culture underscores a racial subtext to the exploitation of college athletes that typically goes unidentified in polite discussion. (UNC’s former longtime Afro-Am chairman, Julius Nyang’oro, has been criminally indicted for fraud.)

....Even before that happens, according to Smith, one or more well-positioned whistle-blowers are likely to go public and start naming names if they think the powers that be are planning to isolate Crowder and Nyang’oro as the sole villains. This thing goes much higher, and there’s much more to come from Chapel Hill.

NCAA gonna be so mad at the basketball program that they're gonna hit the football program with a 4 year bowl van again.

That one just won't go away; definitely turned into the gift that just keeps on giving for fans of rival ACC teams.

I can't believe it hasn't blown completely up on UNC...not just as a conference rivalry thing or wishing bad things on UNC in particular...there were university officials who OK'd the creation of classes that did not exist at all in order to get athletes' grades showing as excelling.

This isn't just an athletic department or just basketball or just football....this is outright fraud by a university who puffs its chest out and lifts its chin up while claiming to be one of the top academic institutions in the land. This is beyond cheating via benefits, money or handing out jobs to family members - if there are more whistle blowers waiting in the wings on this as the article claims, the last thing UNC will be worried about is a simple bowl ban or removal of a few schollies.

This sounds like the definition of a lack of institutional control.

Updating...

Former UNC football player Michael McAdoo ties UNC academic counselors to "no-show classes" and states that academic environment in Chapel Hill for student-athletes is "a scam"

Story linkage: http://www.newsobserver.com/2014/01/15/3535977/former-unc-player-ties-counselors.html

Earlier this week, Mary Willingham, the UNC learning specialist who was the whistle blower on the supposed "lecture style classes" that never met was named a witness on the side of former NCAA student-athletes who are part of a class action lawsuit against the NCAA...everyone knows this case as the Ed O'Bannon case --- former players who think they should be compensated for their playing days in college & that a free education is not compensation enough. O'Bannon sued because his likeness was used by EA Sports in a game licensed by the NCAA for which he was never paid.

PDF of Willingham statement**: http://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/1005965/mary-willingham-declaration-in-obannon-case.pdf

**read this before jumping to conclusions, y'all ;)

....anyone think this will go anywhere? Yea, me neither. NCAA-Indianapolis might see a generous donation headed their way from Central NC in a brown paper bag, but that's about it.... <_< Stay tuned....

the ncaa has to make up its mind what its going to do faster than yall think. the major 5 conferences are ready to pull out of the ncaa. how will this affect unc? it could make it worse for them. there is talk of increased penalties to cheating.

It all sounded this bad for Miami too, and they're still here. The NCAA will never stop the corruption of the programs under their banner.

Empire. He is in multiple genres of making money. He has reached the point were he can lease his name to project and make it a solid investment. He isn't just a real estate mogul.    And do I think he cares about me? No. Nor should he. Our republic isn't about what the government can do for me or you. Remember JFKs ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country speech? I do. Too many people want the government to take care of them and make everything equal. Well life isn't like that. We have a disparate level effort being put in and should rightly expect disparity in results. Those that want the false equality of the race to the bottom should look to state and local handouts and leave the federal government out of it.

Trump also hasn't left a state or campaign in horrible debt....so there's that.

While investing his money may be a myth, he still underperformed the markets/ his peers by vast margins. Here's a little something from Forbes: http://www.forbes.com/sites/forbesleadershipforum/2016/03/03/has-donald-trump-underperformed-in-the-real-estate-business/#40d464085506

Multiply it into an empire? That's exaggerating a bit. He grossly under-performed the market over the course of his businesses, left a wake of unpaid workers, lawsuits, and bankruptcies behind him, and still claims to be a "winner" and the best at everything. There's people with a lot more money that him that didn't leave that kind of middle class destruction behind. Call me crazy, but I don't see someone who's lived his entire life in the 1% and is so out of touch with the way people not as fortunate as him lives is suddenly going to be a champion of the middle class. He's lived his entire life in the upper class, s**tting on his middle class workers. What makes YOU think that he's suddenly going to care about you? Trump's run for presidency is all about him and his ego. That's all he talked about on Monday. I didn't hear enough "we" or "America" except when he said he wanted to make it great again. It was all "I have endorsements from.." or "I have property there.." or "I wanted to say something bad about Hillary but didn't and she's a big meany weeny and I think her campaign commercials are mean". There's nothing of substance in almost ANYTHING he says. It's all just babbling about himself and how he's going to fix America without actually giving a plan as to HOW.
